Tertiary Campus Ministry Association
Annual Conference

Saturday, 28 September - Wednesday, 2 October 2002
Duval College, University of New England,
Elm Avenue,
Armidale, NSW

Theme:

Australia: you're ministering in it! - Chaplaincy on/to today's multi-cultural, multi-faith university campus

We live in a rapdily changing world where change seems to be the only constant. Ideas, values and trends swirl around us at an ever increasing rate making it hard to make sense of where we are heading. How well do we understand the culture we are from and in which we minister? The 2002 TCMA Conference will help us begin to examine our multicultural, multifaith Australian society and culture, especially that of the modern university campus, and better equip us to be effective ministers in a changing environment.

The Papers

A number of the speakers at the conference have agreed to make their papers available in a variety of ways. One can be downloaded and some will be published in the next edition of the TCMA Journal.

Your Hosts

The 2002 TCMA conference was organised by a team of chaplains from the University of Newcastle and the University of New England. UNE has plenty of accommodation but not many chaplains, while Newcastle has more chaplains but no accommodation, so we thought we could combine resources to bring you a conference. We hope you will find it enjoyable, useful and challenging. Newcastle University chaplaincy has provided Angie the seahorse as the basis for the conference logo.

During the conference, we met in Anaiwan country. The Anaiwan, Dhungutti and Gumbaynggir people all have traditional links with the land we will be on. We remember that Aboriginal people have lived in this land since time immemorial, caring for the earth as their God-given vocation. We honour the traditional owners and the elders of this land.

Keynote Speakers:

  • Hugh Mackay - social historian - on the multi-cultural nature of Australian society
  • Aviva Kipen - the Progressive Rabbi who coordinated the Victorian government's interfaith celebrations of the new millennium and the centenary of federation, and the interfaith memorial service for September 11 - on crafting interfaith ceremonies that work
  • Patricia Miller - Director, Student Administration and Support Services at the Australian National University - on issues relating to the university culture itself and the place of faith and spirituality within it

Plus ...

A multi-faith session on dealing with death and other crises. Five speakers will have half an hour each to introduce us to the basics of how their particular faith group deals with crisis and what chaplains not of their faith might to do support someone undergoing a crisis. The faiths represented are Baha'i, Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim and Pagan.

I have tried to steer a course between
having lots and lots of text and nothing else on one page, thus making it boring,
putting too many graphics on a page, making it slow to load
and having you jump from page to page too often.
