Conference Activities

Conference Facilitators

Growing Tertiary Chaplaincy Conference will include facilitators and presenters who will help us to grow as chaplains professionally, personally and spiritually. We will be challenged to grow in our relationships as members of the chaplaincy team, with our sponsoring faith bodies, with the university community and with the administration of the university. We will also be looking at the growth of TCMA, our national professional body.

There will be an emphasis on developing professionalism in chaplaincy through facilitated sessions which focus on present practice, identify aims and dreams, prioritise strategies, develop realistic goals and play with visions.

The following facilitators and presenters will guide us through a largely interactive process on the mornings of the conference.

Dr Tim O'Hearn

Tim O'HearnThe Role of the Campus Minister within the University Community

Tim's experience will allow him to challenge us on the role of campus ministers from the university administrator's point of view, while also appreciating the complex world we inhabit as religious professionals in a secular university. Tim O'Hearn will also be able to help us clarify the way students might see us and the give insight into ways we might meet student needs.

Tim is Dean of Students Australian Catholic University, North Sydney. He has a long association with education and his recent roles at ACU have seen him in administration, in student services and overseeing campus ministry at ACU. He has also been a member of the panel for the professional appraisal of the Sydney Catholic University Chaplains in 2001.

Peta Jones Pellach

Peta Jones PellachThe Multi-faith nature of Australian culture: implications for campus ministry in a secular university

Peta Jones Pellach is Director of Adult Education at The Shalom Institute, University of NSW, Sydney, Australia, where her responsibilities include developing and implementing Jewish community-wide programs in both the formal and informal education sectors.

Peta will offer an analysis of the present context in which university chaplains work at a multifaith level including working with chaplains from different faiths and denominations as a chaplaincy team. Peta will help us reflect upon being the first contact for any student or staff member who seeks personal or pastoral support at the chaplaincy and on strategies for engaging in helpful ways. While recognizing differences, we also want to offer a coherent service for all members of the university community.

Dr Alex Nelson

Alex NelsonMaking a Difference - Open and Vulnerable

Alex comes from a background in adult and transformative learning. He will engage us in a process of identifying, prioritising and strategising ministry goals and dreams through our experience in a multifaith chaplaincy environment. Alex will work interactively and creatively. We will share ideas, see new possibilitie, create new visions and be challenged to be realistic in our goals. Alex is a former chaplain at Macquarie University, Doctor of Education in Adult Education (UTS). He has been involved for many years in community education through the Mercy Foundation urban ministry program, Clinical Pastoral Education including supervision for campus and pastoral ministers, consultancy in ministry including campus ministry and theological and spiritual formation.

The Rev. Dr. Julia Perry

Julia Perry'Beyond the Pale' - Partnerships in Ministry Beyond the Obvious

Julia will reflect on some aspects of tertiary chaplaincy she now sees differently since moving from campus ministry at the University of Newcastle and in the light of her present experience in welfare chaplaincy. Her session will be named: 'Beyond the Pale' - Partnerships in Ministry Beyond the Obvious. She will provide a space for us to look at our various challenges, tasks and dreams as an opportunity to seek creative solutions, strategies and hopes. This will follow on from our earlier presenters using ideas explored there to help us to find practical ways forward.

Julia is an Anglican priest and has worked around the Diocese of Newcastle since 1984. (Yup, she was the first woman ordained!) She has worked in the Parishes of Woy Woy, Merewether, Williamtown/Medowie/Mallabula, San Francisco, Birmingham Gardens and as the Chaplain to the University of Newcastle. She is currently Chaplain to The Samaritans Foundation - the welfare arm of the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle.

Excursions

Participants will be able to choose from three excursions for Wednesday afternoon. These offer a range of experiences from a relaxing walk to more thought provoking options. These will begin after lunch. Times and places for departure will be noted on the programme you will get when you arrive.

Conference participants will be provided with tickets or funds to cover travel, entrance fees and $20 towards a meal that can be purchased as you decide where and with whom you wish to eat that evening.

You may choose any excursion at when you arrive at the conference.

Accompanying non-participants are, of course, encouraged to join in these excursions. The organising committee has not factored the cost of their participation into the fee charged them, in order to leave these people free to decide 'on the day' as the fancy takes them. We have done this especially given that there would be no cost or practical benefit to their paying in advance, and that it could be potentially financially detrimental if they are eligible for travel concessions for reasons of age (at either end of the spectrum).

Workshops

Chaplains from Australian and New Zealand are offering workshops on various topics of general interest as well as a number providing insights into a range of different religions. Check the submissions accepted to see what is already available and the draft timetable to begin to plan what workshops you might like to attend.
