Tourist Information
Welcome to Melbourne and Victoria!
There is much to love about Melbourne – its vibrant energy, staggering choice of restaurants, funky boutiques, café-filled laneways, cool bars, unbeatable galleries, luscious parks, fascinating mix of architecture and village-like inner suburbs, each with its own special character.
Victorian Ocean Views
Melbourne in spring is a delightful time to visit and to enjoy much of what the city has to offer. It is also a wonderful time to venture beyond the city itself. If you can extend your stay before or after the conference, any of the following activities would be great options:
- A drive along the magnificent Great Ocean Road
- Exploring wineries in the Yarra Valley
- Meeting the Penguins on Phillip Island
- Panning for gold at Sovereign Hill, Ballarat

Melbourne's weather and climate
Carlton Gardens
Melbourne has a well-deserved reputation for its changing weather. Over the course of a day it can be possible to experience a little something of the four seasons. A tip for any visitor to Melbourne is to be prepared for anything – take an umbrella and wear shorts!
As a general rule, Melbourne enjoys a temperate climate with warm to hot summers, mild and sometimes balmy spring and autumns, and cool winters. Average daily temperatures during September and October range between 17 and 19 degrees. Evenings will be somewhat cooler!
Getting around Melbourne
Getting around Melbourne is easy, thanks to an integrated network of trains, trams and buses. Tickets allowing travel across all services can be purchased from vending machines at train stations, on trams or buses, or pre-purchased at selected shops like newsagents. An adult 2 hour Zone 1 met ticket will cost $3.30 and a Daily ticket will cost $6.30.
Visitors can also use the free tourist City Circle Tram (coloured burgundy and gold), which does a 30-minute circuit around the city centre, linking major attractions and other transport routes.
For comprehensive public transport and timetable information and to buy tickets, contact Metlink on 131 638 or visit their website: www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au

Other ways of getting around include taxis, boat (an abundance of vessels cruise up and down the Yarra River, travelling to destinations like Williamstown) and cycling (Melbourne has an extensive trail and road network). Laid out in an elementary grid pattern, the city centre is easy to navigate on foot.
A free ‘Blue’ Melbourne City Tourist Shuttle stops at key tourist attractions and destinations in and around the city. The National Bus Company operates the service with three buses travelling the circuit at 15-minute intervals between 10am and 4pm, seven days a week. The complete trip takes 45 minutes and passengers are able to listen to on-board commentary.
